    SIERRA CLUB'S BEYOND COAL CAMPAIGN GETS 150TH PLANT SHUTDOWN

    Celebrities Join Sierra Club In Major Environmental Milestone; 150th coal plant set for retirement: Helps break America’s dependence on fossil fuels and set the stage for clean energy

    October 8, 2013 (Sierra Club)

    "…[T]he Sierra Club and a growing coalition of local, regional and national allies announced the retirement of its 150th coal plant [since 2010] -- a significant milestone in the ongoing campaign to move the country beyond coal no later than 2030…[T]he Brayton Point Power Station in Massachusetts [will] retire by 2017…[The Beyond Coal] campaign…[has spurred] record increases in clean energy…Pollution from burning coal contributes to four out of five of the leading causes of death, in addition to being a major cause of asthma attacks…[R]etiring these 150 dirty and outdated coal plants will help to save 4,000 lives every year, prevent 6,200 heart attacks every year…prevent 66,300 asthma attacks…[and] avoid $1.9 billion in health costs…” click here for more
