    This Is COP 26

What is COP26 and when does this ‘ambitious’ global climate change event begin? Approximately 20,000 people will be attending the formal U.N. climate-change talks in Glasgow. Greta Thunberg plans to rally for more action; Russia’s Putin isn’t coming

Rachel Koning Beals, Oct. 31, 2021 (MarketWatch)

“This weekend begins the 26th Conference of Parties (COP26), which runs through Nov. 12. It’s the annual U.N. meeting of the 197 countries that have agreed to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change…It is held to assess how well nations are dealing with climate change…The first COP was in Berlin in 1995. COP21 in Paris, six years ago, was a key moment for the Paris Agreement…The overall goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to keep the global temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius due to climate change…

…U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as host, released an explainer that detailed four COP26 objectives…Countries bring forward “ambitious” 2030 targets for [cutting] carbon emissions that are in alignment with reaching net zero by mid-century…Critical discussion of accelerating adaptation measures to protect communities, infrastructure and natural habitats…A plan to encourage developed countries to deliver on promises to raise a minimum of $100 billion in climate finance per year. International financial institutions will have to play a critical role in this effort…Finalizing the Paris Rulebook (the rules that will guide implementation of the Paris Agreement)…” click here for more
