SPEAKING OF CARS

A couple of exemplary stories picked up from AutoblogGreen:

First: The DaimlerChrysler subsidiary smart introduces Carbon Zero:

-Now, when you purchase a new smart, you’ll be doing nothing to the environment. That’s because every new smart comes with a free membership to our Carbon Zero program.

-Carbon Zero is a way of helping smart owners to neutralize their vehicle’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. There are two ways you can participate and both are great choices for the environment.

-By funding programs that reduce global warming through Climate Friendly or by planting trees through Greenfleet, you can balance the impact that your car has on the environment.

I wonder if this is more hype or help.

Second: Look out Chicago! Zipcar is coming.

-Zipcar is North America's largest car sharing provider with 1500 vehicles and over 55,000 members. The company is well backed by a top-tier VC.

-Since 1999, Zipcar has provided people who live and work in the city with self-service, on-demand access to a diverse fleet of cars 24/7/365. Zipcar provides a fun, cost-effective and convenient alternative to car ownership for work and leisure transportation. Patented wireless technology and the power of the Internet make accessing and using Zipcar as simple as getting cash from an ATM.

Check here to see where it is and how much it costs.

Innovative, ambitious ideas. We need all we can get.
