JAPAN QUAKE TRIGGERS NUKE PLANT PANIC

Fears nuclear reactor will explode as 'out of control' cooling system fails at plant

"…[T]he nuclear power plant developed a mechanical failure in the system which cools the reactor after it was shut down in the earthquake…[The shutdown was said to be] a precaution, there was no radiation leak and the facility was not in immediate danger.

"The quake also started a fire in a turbine building at the nuclear power plant in north-east of Japan, but the reactor building was [reportedly secure]...[S]moke was [reportedly] observed coming out of the building…separate from the reactor…[T]he cause was under investigation…"
