ANOTHER WAY TO CAPTURE CARBON
Sounds more like a science project than a business so far.
Simpler Way To Counter Global Warming Explained: Lock Up Carbon In Soil And Use Bioenergy Exhaust Gases For Energy
(May 12, 2007) Cornell University via Science Daily)
WHO
Johannes Lehmann, associate professor of soil biogeochemistry in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Cornell.

WHAT
A solution for global warming: Charring (partially burning) trees, grasses and crop residues or animal waste by pyrolysis (low temperature burning w/o oxygen) to create bioenergy and returning the biochar byproduct to the soil.
WHEN
Good question. Presently possible but is it presently practical? And for what?
WHERE
The new information was published in the current Nature.
WHY
Biochar is twice as carbon dense as the residue of other energy-producing burning. This means burning it creates more energy than it requires. Bio-sequestering the by-product in the soil also improves the soil, further offsetting the energy consumption.
Besides the value of the energy produced, which can be used for anything from electricity to fuel cells, the economics are enhanced by the value of the carbon sink created by the char,

QUOTES
Lehmann: “…biochar sequestration could offset about 10 percent of the annual U.S. fossil-fuel emissions in any of several scenarios…Biochar sequestration, combined with bioenergy production, does not require a fundamental scientific advance, and the underlying production technology is robust, clean and simple, making it appropriate for many regions of the world…It not only reduces emissions but also sequesters carbon, making it an attractive target for energy subsidies and for inclusion in the global carbon market."
