TESTING CLEAN COAL
The ANSWER to all our problems or an OXYMORON? Only the science can tell us for sure. This is another exciting, if expensive, pilot project.
California Utility Pushes Clean-Coal Tests
May 18, 2007 (UPI)
WHO
Southern California Edison (SCE), John Bryson, chairman, Edison International

WHAT
SCE is seeking regulatory approval of Clean Hydrogen Power Generation (CHPG), a 600 megawatt “clean coal” commercial feasibility project.
WHEN
Announcement made May 17. Plant start date pending regulatory approval.
WHERE
Announcement made at SCE Rosemead headquarters. Plant location not identified.
WHY
- Proposed: A 600 megawatt coal-fired integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant with an associated carbon-capture chemical process producing hydrogen and enhanced oil recovery carbon sequestration. This is the first time this set of technologies has been combined.
- $52 million funding will come from 2 years of customer revenues.

QUOTES
Bryson: "Edison believes that if California and the nation are to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants while increasing power supplies using domestic fuels, companies like ours must take the lead in exploring the feasibility of these advanced technologies…This proposal is a part of a larger strategy we advocate for reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions -- increased purchases of renewable energy, increased support for energy efficiency, switching to cleaner transportation fuels, and investment in emerging clean generation technologies…"
