Landmark Texan brewery turns into solar lab

WHO
San Antonio developer Silver Ventures; San Antonio-owned utility CPS Energy, Milton Lee, general manager.

WHAT
Pearl Brewery, a Texas landmark as the original home of Pearl Beer, is being converted to the Full Goods Building and, as a commercial/retail/residential facility, will become a “learning laboratory” for New Energy and green building practices.
WHEN
- Renovation project announced June 11. Completion scheduled for June, 2008.
- Pearl beer was made at the brewery from 1883 to 2001.
WHERE
North of downtown San Antonio.

WHY
- Solar panels will provide 25% of the 67,000 sq. ft. building’s electricity (200 kilowatts). CPS Energy (600,000 power customers, 300,000 gas customers) will be testing solar applications. An educational presentation and viewable power meters will be on display.
- Goal: 15% of customers’ peak power from renewables by 2020.
- Total projected cost: $1.35 million.
