CHINESE SERIOUS ABOUT EFFICIENCY
20 new jobs, checking efficiency. Not to mention the potentially countless new jobs restoring and improving efficiency. And the jobs pay for themselves with savings on energy and CO2 reduction.
Maybe somebody should declare a War on Inefficency. Then the president could appoint an Inefficiency Czar. Lots of candidates in the current administration.

WHAT
City officials have assigned a 20-member team to audit energy efficiency at schools and businesses.
WHEN
Beijing is preparing to demonstrate itself as a “green” city when it hosts the 2008 Summer Olympics. The city also has energy reduction and renewables use goals for 2010.

WHY
- 2010 energy goal: 20% reduction.
- 2010 electricity goal: 20% from renewables.
- Intent of “Eenrgy Police”: heighten energy use awareness, motivate energy-saving practices
- Specific items to be checked: Buildings no cooler than 79 degrees, summer, no warmer than 68 degrees, winter.
- Private citizens are also encouraged to report infractions. Inefficient buildings may be penalized, publicly embarrassed and, eventually, shut down.
