Google, Intel launch energy efficiency program
Leonard Anderson, June 12, 2007 (Reuters via Yahoo News)
WHO
Google Inc. (Urs Holzle, senior vice president of operations), Intel Corp. (Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president/general manager), joined by Dell Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Lenovo Group Ltd., Microsoft Corp., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, World Wildlife Fund, California utility PG&E Corp. and 25+ environmental groups, companies and universities

WHAT
"Climate Savers Computing Initiative": A joint effort by the two computer-world supergiants to propagate energy-efficient personal computers and server systems
WHEN
- Launched June 12.
- Personal computer volume up 12.2% (to 256.7 million) for 2007
- Computer industry figures suggest there will be 1 billion computers in use by 2008. 2 billion 5 years later. (This info from The Cost of Energy)
WHERE
Google HQ, Mountain View, CA

WHY
- Greater efficiency=less energy consumed, less greenhouse gases (GHGs) generated
- New goal: 90 percent efficiency standard for power supplies, cutting GHGs 54 million tons/yr and $5.5 billion+ in energy costs
- Will follow EPA Energy Star guidelines (80% efficient PC computer power supplies, 90 percent by 2010) and suggestions from CA PG&E
- Computer cost increase: $20; Server cost increase: $30
QUOTES
- Holzle: "Today, the average desktop PC wastes nearly half of its power and the average server wastes one-third of its power…"
- Gelsinger: “…more efficient systems [will] pay for themselves in lower energy costs.”
