‘Opportunity to invest in wind energy in Jordan is more promising now’

World Bank (WB), The Global Environment Fund (GEF),

WHAT
- Based on the promise of wind energy in Jordan, the WB is making a $92.6 million loan to the Kingdom to develop the resource and the GEF will support the project with $6.35 million.
WHEN

WHY
- The project will be developed in 4 stages, beginning with a build-operate-transfer basis. After that, it will require government support and GEF backing to eventually become commercially feasible.
- The statement recognizes significant obstacles, including Jordanian tariffs, poor infrastructure and lack of knowledge on wind energy.
- Solutions include economic planning and incentives for academic institutions to train and a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) of 3% renewables by 2015.
