    RAJASTHAN WIND

Talk about a place ripe for the development of distributed transmission!

Windmills of Rajasthan may solve city’s power woes
    June 21, 2007 (Indian Express)

    WHO
    Suzlon Energy Limited,

    WHAT
Multinational wind farm developer Suzlon is evaluating new farm locations in India and working with the city of Chandigarh to develop farms in the state of Rajasthan and deliver it to the city.
Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are in the northwest (click to enlarge)

    WHEN
    - Suzlon will make its formal proposal to the city on July 3.
    - Preliminary studies take approximately a year.

    WHERE
    - The Indian city of Chandigarh, capital of the two states of Punjab and Haryana, is considering the development of wind farms in the state of Rajasthan, which has a lot of wind.
    - Suzlon has already developed wind farms in many Indian states including Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra.
    - Suzlon has signed an agreement to do a feasibility study at Morni, less than 20 km from Chandigarh.
    - A similar study is in the works fothe Hoshiarpur district of the state of Punjab.

    WHY
    - Chandigarh is in need of 300 megawatts of electricity supply. It has already looked at natural gas and solar. The natural gas pipeline proposal did not carry through and a 50 megawatt solar plant was too expensive.
    - Suzlon contends transmission from Rajasthan to Chandigarh is practical.

    QUOTES
Chandigarh senior official: "We had undertaken a complete exercise last year where the possibility of power generation through windmills was explored after the Centre asked for a feasibility report. The report categorically said wind power density and wind velocity is less than required here. But now we would like to see Suzlon's presentation…"
