THE RISE OF NUCLEAR (AGAIN)
Nuclear always sounds so appealing when advocates talk about it, but they always dismiss the questions of government subsidies, waste storage, weapons proliferation, risk of accidents and terrorist threats. Just explain to NewEnergyNews how the same investment in wind farms doesn't provide the same energy without these problems.
Two Global reports Show Nuclear’s Rise

WHAT
Two new reports (BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2007, OECD/NEA’s Nuclear Energy Data) document growing use of nuclear energy for electricity.
WHEN
- The BP Statistical Review (SR) was published June 12.
- Nuclear Energy Data (NED) was published June 14.
- Both reports document 2006.
WHERE
Both reports document world use.
rising uranium cost is thought to be an expression of dwindling supply -- peak wind is not yet a problem (click to enlarge)
WHY
- SR: Nuclear use grew 1.4%, 436 nuclear reactors produce 16% of world electricity, 104 US reactors produce 20% of US electricity, increases are expected.
- NED: Nuclear provided 23.1% of its 30 member states’ electricity in 2006, a 1.8% increase from the previous year.
QUOTES
Hayward: "Without a price for carbon, there is no mechanism that can guide the energy system towards a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions…"
