    CLEAN GREEN HONG KONG

Can't wait to see what these folks come up with once they get rolling with renewables.

Hong Kong explores sustainable energy sources as citizens go green
Roland Lim, 20 July 2007 (Channel NewsAsia via MediaCorps News)

    WHO
CW Tso, General Manager, Hongkong Electric Company
The prototype. As they say in advertising, watch this space.

    WHAT
Hong Kong is seeking sources of sustainable energy.

    WHEN
    Target for sustainable goals: 2012

    WHERE
The city of Hong Kong’s wind turbine is on Lamma Island.

    WHY
    - Hong Kong presently relies on cheap but dirty coal.
    - The city presently has an 800-kilowatt wind energy turbine, a pilot project anticipated to be expanded to 40 turbines (100 megawatts), which would provide 2% of Hong Kong electricity.
    - The city has also initiated an “Energy Efficiency Labelling” program to stimulate public energy conservation efforts, including the reduced waste of plastic bags.

    QUOTES
Tso: "We are working on the feasibility of building a wind farm (of) 100 megawatts in the southern part of Hong Kong…We are working on the Environmental Impact Assessment, and we will cover a lot of assessments like environment impact, ecological impact, fishery and maritime traffic…a couple of months ago, we had very bad weather - full of smog and the weather was getting warmer and warmer. And this triggered off awareness among Hong Kong people that we had to do something about the air quality, we had to do something about climate change…"
