    NORWAY RESEARCHES CARBON CAPTURE

Undertaking setting of standards in this field is to the world’s benefit. Nobody knows whether geologic formations will contain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions long term. The only completed study NewEnergyNews knows of suggested a possible danger to groundwater. US politicians make promises about “clean coal” all the time but the truth is the technology has yet to be proved, is probably a long way from commercial-scale possibility and is likely to be expensive.

DNV Wants To Regulate Carbon Trade
    July 9, 2007 (UPI)

    WHO
    Det Norske Veritas (DNV),
Where Norway got ahead of the rest of the world in geologic sequestration (click to enlarge)

    WHAT
DNV does independent governance in association with Norway’s Ministry of Finance. It is developing proper standards and best practices for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects.

    WHEN
1 of 3 projects has already begun; the other 2 are in planning stages.

    WHERE
Neither the article nor the DNV website specify a location for any of the projects. Norway’s Sleipner Field is one of the most advanced and well-known sub-seabed geologic sequestration projects in the world.

    WHY
    - DNV is setting up 3 projects: (1) How to store captured greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in sub-seabed geologic formations; (2) how to “qualify” storage projects and technology; and, (3) the proper standard for pipeline transmission of GHGs.
    - Participants for (1): Aker Kvaerner, Statoil, Norsk Hydro, and Statkraft.
    - Participants for (2) and (3) are being sought.
There is plenty of geology in which to sequester but there are a lot of steps along the way and its good to see that somebody is thinking about protocols (click to enlarge)

    QUOTES
Hans Bratfos, head, DNV Cleaner Energy Department: “There are obstacles that need to be dealt with regarding carbon capture and storage. These are related to the regulatory, legal, economical and technological risks involved in developing and operating a carbon capture and storage system…By facilitating these projects on capture, transmission and storage of carbon dioxide, DNV is contributing to the removal of several important barriers in order to realize the full vision of carbon capture and storage…"
