CMC Energy Services of Maryland, NBC Universal’s Sci-Fi Channel, the Alliance to Save Energy, Edison Electric Institute, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and member companies, OSRAM Sylvania, Dow Chemical Company.

WHAT
In conjunction with Eureka, the Eureka Smart House Energy Efficiency Challenge will be a reality-TV style home makeover contest stressing energy efficiency.
WHEN
Campaign/contest launched June 27.

WHY
- Requirement for contestants: Answers to energy-related questions and a short essay explaining why they deserve a home makeover for energy efficiency.
- Grand Prize: Energy efficiency improvements worth up to $25,000 including
CMC energy audit, new kitchen/laundry appliances from Energy Star and Whirlpool,
new computer/electronics/home wiring from CEA, compact fluorescent lighting by OSRAM Sylvania and air leak sealing by Dow Chemical Company.

Alstom enters wind power market with Spanish deal

Alstom (CEO Patrick Kron), Ecotecnia
WHAT
Alstom, a French engineering group that builds coal, hydroelectric and nuclear plants, bought Ecotecnia, a Spanish manufacturer of wind turbines and solar panels.

WHEN
- Purchased announced June 26.
- Ecotecnia: 2007 sales of 300-350 million euros, operating margin of 7%.
WHERE
The announcement was made in Paris, where Alstom is based. Ecotecnia is based in Barcelona but 50% of its sales are in other European markets.
WHY
- The purchase price is 350 million euros ($471.1 million).
- This is Alstom’s first move into wind energy.
- Ecotecnia: 1,500 wind turbines installed/installing, generating 1,433 megawatts of electricity, 2% of world capacity.
