    ALL SOLAR COMPUTER SERVER

It is hard to believe these folks would be plunging ahead on a costly project like this if they weren't sure they had conquered the problem of solar's intermittency.

New Web Firm Greenest Host To Be All Solar
    July 31, 2007 (UPI)
    and
    Sustainable IT
Ted Samson, July 30, 2007 (InfoWorld)

    WHO
Greenest Host, Mike Corrales, CEO; Affordable Internet Services Online, Inc. (AISO)

    WHAT
The new Greenest Host 2000-square-foot data center/web hosting facility, housed in an AISO building, is powered entirely by solar energy.

    The facility's solar array.

    WHEN
Click here for the live web cam feed from the facility.

    WHERE
    - Greenest Host headquarters: San Diego, CA
    - Solar facility: The California desert, 90 miles northeast of San Diego.

    WHY
    - Greenest Host’s 600 server-capable center is run directly from electricity generated by the solar array during daylight hours. At night, they draw on power also stored during the day by the solar array in an on-site battery system. There is a propane generator for emergencies, propane being Clean Air Act compliant and ecologically benign.
    - The facility also uses AMD's Opteron-powered servers that reportedly use 60% less energy and generate 50% less heat. It has 2 Energy Star-compliant Freus air conditioning systems with multiple, redundant APC intelligent monitoring.
    - Construction with exterior steel and several layers of environmentally friendly insulation adds to efficiency, as does a circulation system capable of drawing air in and out, according to external conditions, to help maintain the interior temperature with minimal energy consumption.

    QUOTES
Corrales: "Personally, my core values tend to skew toward green application and green causes…We wanted to make it really easy for end consumers and small businesses to be able to build their own Web sites in a way that coincided with their own personal value system."
