    10 WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY

The great thing about being more efficient is that it saves money AND it’s easy. KC infoZine: “While lowering your household energy bills, energy efficiency doesn't require sacrificing comfort or convenience, and it will increase your indoor comfort.”

    The
Alliance to Save Energy offers 10 tips.

Top 10 Ways to be More Energy Efficient – and Green – in 2008

    Alliance to Save Energy

    WHAT
The cheapest, most readily obtainable emissions-free energy is the energy not used.

    WHEN
With these tips, reducing energy consumption and saving money can be immediate.

    WHERE
    Home, vehicles, office

    WHY
    (1) Every 5 mph over 60 costs 20 cents/gallon. Excessive acceleration/braking may lower mileage 33%.
    (2) Proper insulation can save $225/year in heating and cooling.
    (3) ENERGY STAR appliances cut power costs 30%.
    (4) Programmable thermostats that selectively heat/cool only rooms in use cut consumption (and costs) 10%.
    (5) Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) give the same light as traditional bulbs with 1/3 the energy because they generate 70% less heat. For the same reason, they last 10 times longer and sve $50/bulb.
    (6) Tuned up cars improve mileage 4%, about $80/year.
    (7) Properly inflated tires improve mileage 3.3%, about $60/year.
    (8) Look for ENERGY STAR electronics and turn them off when not in use.
    (9) Clean heating/cooling system air filters.
    (10) Turn the lights off!

    QUOTES
KC infoZine: “Remember when your mom would ask, ‘Do you think we own stock in the electric company??!!’ Take her sage advice and turn off lights, computers, TVs, stereos, etc. when you are done using them.”
