CHINA SEES WIND AS ITS FUTURE

China’s energy consumption is enormous but its energy demand growth is expected to be even greater. With new goals for obtaining more power from New Energy, the Chinese government is expected to emphasize expansion in wind energy production capacity.

At the end of 2007, China had 3300 turbines generating 2.6 gigawatts. 90% of this capacity is from imported hardware. The potential, like so much in China, is huge. The Chinese Meteorological Research Institute estimates the country has 253 gigawatts of potential wind energy onshore. Offshore, its long coastline could generate 750 gigawatts.

Needless to say, the world’s most aggressive wind energy manufacturers, builders, suppliers and producers will be at the trade fair announced in the article below.

IFAT CHINA 2008: Wind energy – the eco-power of the future
Petra Gagel, 25 January 2008 (Open PR)

    WHO
Key players in China’s New Energy sector

    WHAT
Key players in China’s New Energy sector will gather for IFAT CHINA 2008 in the fall. Wind energy manufacturers, builders, suppliers and producers from all over the world are expected to be present.

Interestingly, China has the most wind where it has the least grid. So it will be using its wind regionally. (click to enlarge)

    WHEN
    - IFAT CHINA will be September 23 through 25, 2008.
    - China’s rulers instituted a law requiring its utilities to obtain 5% of their power from new Energy by 2010 and 10% by 2020.

    WHERE
    - IFAT CHINA will be in Shanghai.
    - The Chinese wind market is presently dominated by Danish and German suppliers. 90% of existing capacity is imported. Chinese producers are just beginning to introduce their own systems.

Lots of foreign activity in China wind. (click to enlarge)

    WHY
    - China’s leaders see the potential in wind energy to generate emissions-free power. They also see wind energy as a relatively simple alternative to the nation’s dependence on coal. Finally, they see the opportunity to spread energy production to regions not presently tied to power sources by China’s limited transmission infrastructure.
    - China’s leaders see wind farms as uncomplicated and inexpensive undertakings relative to the building of coal-fired power plants.

    QUOTES
Gagel, article author: “IFAT CHINA 2008 is a chance to obtain an overview of the situation on the ground in Chinese environmental market. It is an opportunity to get to know the key players and pave the way for successful new business.”
