So, how would Gore expect "clean coal" to be implemented, if no jurisdiction is willing to put a price on carbon emissions high enough to force the industry to do it? No jurisdiction is applying regulations to force the industry to do it that way either. The cost, estimated by the IPCC in its IPCC Special Report on Carbon Capture and Storage, would be around 6 - 7.5 cents a kilowatt hour compared to coal fired power without carbon capture at 5 cents a kilowatt hour, but compare to any other energy source and you'll find that coal even with carbon capture as described by the IPCC would be competitive in a lot of places and we'll be seeing a lot of it, AS SOON AS SOMEONE DECIDES TO FORCE THE INDUSTRY TO DO IT.
Gore is right to compare "clean coal" to the auto industry. No one is forcing them to come up with emission free vehicles, and its amazing isn't it, they aren't doing it. What a surprise. Are they all evil? Maybe, but when we wanted the auto industry to finally do something about smog, they were able to do it, ONLY WHEN FORCED BY REGULATION.
Gore is getting on a bandwagon here, it seems to be some kind of religion, carbon can't be removed from coal emissions, and it doesn't matter to these people that it is the IPCC that is the source for what they are calling the "illusion" or "delusion" of "clean coal". The industry is just doing what it can get away with, i.e. nothing, because they've been so successful over the years perpetrating the illusion that there is some kind of debate going on over the science. Get a grip Gore. This is a low point for him.
