DONE W/TALK ABOUT CLIMATE? GO HERE TO ACT
Tired of hearing about climate change? Then do something. Now.
July 2009 (BeyondTalk.net)
[From Beyond Talk:] "December 7-18, 2009, the world's leaders will meet in Copenhagen to decide what to do about climate change…If this meeting were held today, it would produce an agreement - but it wouldn't be strong enough to do much good…
"In order to bring global CO2 back to the safe zone, we need to make massive emissions cuts now. There's only one way we can achieve that: we need to turn the political heat way up…[I]n today's new political climate, civil disobedience works. This past spring, thousands of people risked arrest in order to shut down the coal-fired plant that supplies Congress's power. The next day it was announced that the plant would stop burning coal forever."

[From Beyond Talk:] "But time is far too short to shut down one power plant at a time. RIght now, we need…an end to the subsidies that let fossil fuel companies enrich themselves at the expense of the future, and the laws that let them lobby against us…climate justice for the countries that have done nothing to cause the problem, but are already feeling the early effects…an end to industrial logging of primary forests…a carbon tax…an immediate political solution grounded in reality - meaning we've got to cut our emissions a lot…
"During the Great Depression…massive pressure from citizens, often including civil disobedience…allowed Roosevelt to make the changes we all take for granted…[T]he uncompromising action of tens of thousands…ended U.S. Segregation and South African Apartheid…Today, when our leaders find themselves cornered by industrial lobbyists, they must be able to point out the window at us. Then, like Roosevelt and other leaders before them, they will be able to say: 'Sorry, I can't.'"

[From Beyond Talk:] "This December, at Copenhagen, our leaders can choose to save our civilization. After that it may be too late. It's up to all of us to hold them accountable. Won't you join us?
"Scientists tell us that the maximum level of CO2 our atmosphere can safely bear is 350 parts per million. Beyond that, our planet is at imminent risk of catastrophic changes we'll never be able to stop — meaning billions of people will die…Today, the level of CO2 in the atmosphere is already at 390 worldwide — and it's rising at 2 parts per million per year…"
