    GERMAN NEW ENERGY BUILDERS INDIA-BOUND

    Siemens Plans to Ramp Up India Operations

    "German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG… is seeking to ramp up its Indian operations over the next three years to tap into the green energy market and manufacture an array of engineering products for sale in the domestic and global markets…

    "…[T]he company is seeking to invest 16 billion rupees ($346 million) over the next three years and significantly raise its head count in India to meet its growth objectives in the country…"

    "Engineering companies are eager to take advantage of growth prospects in India…Power equipment makers are looking to receive major orders in thermal and green energy projects as several new power plants are planned to come up in the next six to 10 years to bridge the country's large power deficit.

    "…[Siemens] plans to set up six manufacturing hubs…The company hopes to generate revenue of 65 billion rupees ($1.4 billion) from the sale of such products by the end of 2020."

    "As part of its green energy strategy, Siemens plans to invest five billion rupees constructing wind power equipment in India, with an initial capacity of 200 MW. It expects to ship its wind power products in 2012…[The] solar energy market is another great opportunity for [Siemens India Ltd.]…

    "…Siemens India--which is present in the engineering, medicine, telecommunications and information technology sectors in India--would likely increase its staff strength from 17,000 at present to 25,000 by the end of 2012…[though it] plans to lay off 2,000 employees in Germany…"
