A Telling Look Back At Wind’s Beginning
20 utility scale turbines in the U.S. in 1976 turned into the astonishing total of 72 (!) in 1979 and today the U.S. has tens of thousands of turbines and 35,000+ megawatts of installed capacity. In 1980, it was amazing for a turbine to be connected to the grid; today, wind is the grid’s second biggest source of new generating capacity. 29 years ago the 2.5 megawatt turbine was a yet-to-be realized vision and today it is becoming the standard size. This history is a telling way to understand the wind industry’s goal of building 10-megawatt machines and providing 20% of U.S. power by 2030: The industry has a history of turning dreams into reality.
