LA TIMES GETS NEW ENERGY WRONG AGAIN
Fact Check: LA Times Off Target On Renewables, Reliability
Michael Goggin, 4 December 2013 (Into the Wind)
"While apocalyptic writing may sell newspapers…the Los Angeles Times has veered in the direction of fear-mongering over [the state grid’s capability to] transition to renewable energy…[L]arge amounts of wind energy are being reliably integrated onto the power system today. Iowa and South Dakota already reliably produce more than 20% of their electricity from wind energy, and another seven states reliably produce more than 10%. At one point earlier this year, wind energy provided 35% of the electricity on the main Texas grid, while at another point more than 60% of the electricity of the main Colorado utility system came from wind energy…Dozens of in-depth wind integration studies, including several by the California grid operator, have confirmed that far larger amounts of wind energy can be added to the power system without harming reliability…[The article] had to reference blackouts that were not caused by renewable energy, as there simply aren’t any renewable energy reliability incidents to point to…” click here for more
