Utilities, advocates find common ground on community solar

“If there’s any indication of agreement among stakeholders after a months-long study to expand solar energy in Michigan, it’s that it could be done through community projects…[While there are disputes between dominant utilities Consumers Energy and DTE Energy] and advocacy groups over determining a value of solar and whether energy costs would be unfairly shifted among customers under expanded solar programs, the two utilities have indicated plans of launching community-solar projects…Community solar allows utility customers — including those without a suitable location to build their own array — to invest in solar at a more modest cost than an at-home system…[Utilities see the idea as a possible] way to implement an expanded solar program that is accessible to all, avoids [subsidies and] cross-subsidization, [is voluntary, and] is sustainable…Community solar could be one avenue to expand [solar and development could be done with utility capital, by private solar developers, or through crowd-funding]…” click here for more
