Crisis deepens for Scottish wave energy sector

"The crisis in Scotland’s embryonic wave energy sector has deepened with an announcement by leading developer Aquamarine Power that it will lay off all but its core staff…Aquamarine’s move came less than two weeks after the collapse of rival wave energy pioneer Pelamis…[Both have been testing technology in waters off Orkney…The troubles of the two companies are a heavy blow to Scotland’s hopes of leading the way in turning wave energy into a clean and cheap source of electricity…The complexity of wave movements makes tapping their energy offshore extremely difficult. Aquamarine’s machines seek to make the task simpler by operating relatively close to the shore — where waves are more regular — but this means having to cope with a highly challenging operating environment…[P]eople in the renewables industry say they have found it increasingly difficult to persuade backers that their technology can soon be made commercially viable…[though Scotland has been called] a potential ‘Saudi Arabia of marine power’…” click here for more
