Ocean energy projects key to getting Hawaii to 100% renewable, state energy czar says

“Wave energy and ocean thermal energy conversion, or OTEC, are two of the renewable energy resources that Hawaii will need to explore to bring the state closer to its 100 percent renewable energy goal by 2045 [according to] Mark Glick, administrator for the state Energy Office…Groups from the United States and Japan have agreed to consider moving ahead with the design, development and construction [in 2016-2017 of a] planned 1-megawatt OTEC plant at the [Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology Park]…Last year, Makai Ocean Engineering completed the world’s largest operational OTEC plant at its facility in Kona...[It was] the first plant of its kind to be connected to a U.S. electrical grid, generating 100 kilowatts of sustainable, continuous electricity…Besides OTEC and wave energy, there are also two offshore wind farms being proposed for Hawaii’s waters.” click here for more
