The UK’s Flying Ocean Wind
Floating Offshore Airborne Wind Energy
David Ainsworth, 4 April 2016 (WindTech International)
“…Kite Power Solutions (KPS) is one of a handful of developers of airborne wind energy systems who are pushing forward a technology to challenge the conventional horizontal axis wind turbines in the utility-scale offshore market. Floating offshore [wind systems] could potentially halve offshore wind’s levelised cost of energy (LCOE)…[System yield is expected at a 10 to 15 percent higher capacity factor than existing wind turbines in the same wind environment. The first-of-a-kind cost is around $2.3 million per megawatt. As the technology matures it will reach about $1.8 million per megawatt and an LCOE below $57 per megawatt-hour. In the next two years, KPS will build a 500 kilowatt pre-commercial demonstrator, and following that it will build a 3 megawatt commercial demonstrator, which will be operational in about 2020]…” click here for more
