Climate Change Pokes Through the Front Lawn

“…[The water's edge is moving deeper into the neighborhood in southeastern Virginia's coastal Hampton Roads region] as sea level rises. Flooding is a growing [and hard to deny] problem…Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Chesapeake Bay and the James River, Hampton Roads faces the double threat of rising water and sinking land…[Sea level rise is causing "nuisance flooding," which is up 325 percent in the last half-century. It] closes roads, overwhelms storm drains and corrodes infrastructure…And it's expected to get worse…At least another 1.5 feet is expected to go underwater by the end of this century, and possibly as much as 7.5 feet…It's not just homes at risk. The nation's sixth-largest container port and the world's largest naval base are located here…Defending it all against climate change [may cost billions. But] the Virginia legislature won't even call the problem [‘sea level rise’ because its link to climate change] creates friction in the statehouse…” click here for more
