Mauritius To Look At East Africa Wave Energy
Mauritius deploys wave monitoring device to harness wave energy
29 June 2016 (ESI Africa)
“Off the east coast of the African continent, the Republic of Mauritius…[has embarked on] a new journey in harnessing the potential of ocean energy…[A collaborative agreement with Australia’s Carnegie Wave Energy will evaluate] the prospects of developing wave energy for Mauritius…[and use wave energy technology] for the production of electricity and desalinated water…[Five potential locations just off the Mauritius coast have] been identified for the deployment of the wave monitoring device… Mauritius has a total area of 2.3 million square kilometres of Exclusive Economic Zone and is geographically well positioned to harness ocean energy. This may be in the form of offshore wind, ocean wave, ocean current, ocean thermal and ocean saline energy…Compared to more developed New Energies like wind and solar, wave energy is less variable and] more predictable…Mauritius has no known oil, natural gas or coal reserves, and therefore depends on imported petroleum products [and coal] to meet [75.4%] of its energy requirements…[New Energy, including hydropower, provide] about 22% of the primary energy supply…” click here for more
