A Solar Panel Implanted Inside Your Body? Scientists in Switzerland have developed a prototype that soaked up enough sun through a skinlike filter to power a cardiac pacemaker with ease
Daniel Akst, Januarty 5, 2017 (Wall Street Journal)
“Implantable medical devices save lives, but the devices usually depend on batteries. And batteries [enlarge the devices and] don’t last forever. Patients who live long enough eventually need another implant procedure…[which entails] risk…Now scientists in Switzerland have developed a prototype for an implantable solar panel that, in tests outside the human body, soaked up enough sun through a skinlike filter to power a cardiac pacemaker with ease…The device isn’t ready to be implanted in humans, so they [mounted a small rectangular solar panel on armbands worn by 32 volunteers with] specially coated glass filters to stably emulate the light-transmitting properties of skin...[Implantable devices don’t need much electricity and daily] life in Switzerland, not an especially sunny place, produced plenty of power…Theoretically, a solar implant could power a medical device indefinitely.” click here for more
