California becomes first U.S. state to require solar panels on new homes

“Builders in California will be required to fit solar panels on most new homes from 2020…[The new state building standards, adopted unanimously by the five-member California Energy Commission, are the first in the U.S with this requirement. It] is part of the state’s effort to fight global climate change…[Estimates are it will increase] the up-front cost of a new home by nearly $10,000…[and] add about $40 to monthly mortgage payments but will compensate for that by saving residents $80 a month on energy bills…[The new building codes are a major win for the solar installation industry and could raise solar industry demand 10% to 15%.
