EDF Energy wades further offshore with major wind farm deal

“The energy giant behind the UK’s nuclear revival will deepen its offshore wind ambitions with a major deal to buy a controversial Scottish wind project…EDF Energy, the Hinkley Point developer, is understood to have paid around half a billion pounds…[for Mainstream Renewable Power’s 448 MW, 64 turbine] Neart na Gaoithe wind farm…The £2bn wind farm will require another £1.5bn of investment from EDF to construct the turbines which are expected to generate enough electricity to power 375,000 homes…EDF said the project will be open to other investors looking to grab a stake, with hopes it will have its turbines spinning by 2023…EDF is also hoping to revive the UK’s onshore wind industry by moving ahead with plans to build turbines on the Isle of Lewis…Under new rules the turbines qualify for "offshore" wind subsidies because they are located at arms length of the UK’s main grid...” click here for more
