What 100% New Energy Is
What Does 100% Renewable Energy Really Mean?
Joshua Rhodes, August 21, 2018 (Forbes)
“…[The debate between the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF), a conservative think tank, and the Mayor of Georgetown, TX,] has created a great case study on what it really means to be 100% renewable… Georgetown, TX (population: ~67,000) decided [to be one of the first municipalities] to obtain 100% of its electricity from renewable sources, namely wind and solar…Georgetown is a conservative town and] wasn’t overtly trying to go green, but that [contracting for solar and wind] was the cheapest and most secure option for local residents and businesses…[TPPF said the city is not 100% renewable because their electricity is through contracts, not] physical delivery of the electricity…
[But the city paid for 100% renewable energy and it was delivered and] once it’s on the grid, it’s all the same at the wall socket…[This entails subsidies for wind and solar because the federal government projects, they and Texas provide billions in subsidies to the energy sector per year, with the bulk of it] going to oil and gas through favorable tax codes…[TPPF is wrong that variable renewables require one for one traditional generation backup because grid] operators have gotten very adept in forecasting solar and wind output, and continuously update their models…[Texas gets almost 20% of its electricity from wind without] an increased need for backup…[100% renewable energy would be a tall order but there] is considerable agreement among most engineers in this space that getting the grid to 80% green would be relatively easy…” click here for more
