The New Normal Is NOT Normal
Global energy agency asked to stop normalising dangerous climate change; 60 business leaders, scientists and investors call on the International Energy Agency to reframe its annual report to promote a path to climate safety

“The world’s most influential energy agency is normalizing a dangerous climate future, according to 60 business leaders, scientists and investors…[The International Energy Agency World Energy Outlook 2019’s “New Policy Scenario” (NPS) should be renamed as business as usual] because those measures are ‘no longer new’ and ‘represents an insufficient level and pace of transformation’… Under the NPS, global coal demand would be sustained roughly at current levels in 2040…[but the scientific consensus is] that keeping the climate from warming more than 1.5C would require coal use to…be almost eradicated by the middle of the century…
…[An IEA spokesperson said the NPS is ‘not a normative scenario or an outcome that we would like to see; we have consistently used this scenario to highlight the need for much stronger policy action in order to meet the world’s sustainable development goals’…[but governments and investors say the report is used to make decisions based on what it foresees as] what the future looks like…[The protesting group wants the IEA to make clear the consequences of the NPS trajectory and] how the climate change impacts projected under such trajectory would undermine the development it suggests will happen.” click here for more
