Fiji And Iowa See It, Why Can’t Washington?

'Fight for our lives': Fiji calls world leaders 'selfish' as it lays out climate crisis blueprint; Minister says archipelago in grave situation through no fault of its own as he unveils plan for net zero emissions and village relocation

Kate Lyons, 6 August 2019 (UK Guardian)

    Iowa City declares climate crisis

Zachary Oren Smith, August 6, 2019 (Iowa City Press-Citizen)

“Fiji will introduce one of the world’s most ambitious legislative programs to tackle the climate crisis, and has labelled the global community’s decision to set aside the call for global heating to be capped at 1.5C ‘grossly irresponsible and selfish’…[Fiji’s new law] will include tighter restrictions on the use of plastics, a framework for Fiji to reduce its emissions to net-zero by 2050, the introduction of a carbon credits scheme and the establishment of procedures for the relocation of communities at risk from the adverse effects of the climate crisis…”

“…[On August 6, the Iowa City Council declared a Climate Crisis…[The move] is the culmination of a conversation begun by Iowa City high school student Massimo Paciotto-Biggers and his group the Climate Strikers who pushed council to amend the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan passed not even a year ago…[T]he city adjusted the carbon emission goals bringing them in line with [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] rates that will limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius…The original plan called for the city to reduce carbon dioxide emission by 26% to 28% by 2025 and by 80% by 2050. The new reduction goals are 45% from 2010 levels by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050…” click here and here for more
