U.S. energy storage monitor Q3 2020
September 2020 (Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables and U.S. Energy Storage Association)
“In Q2 2020, 168 MW were deployed, up 72% quarter-over-quarter and up 117% year-over-year, marking the strongest second quarter to date…[Key markets in] California and Hawaii successfully kept installations progressing through Covid-19 lockdowns…One large front-of-meter project in California, accounting for more than two-thirds of the total MW deployed, helped drive the strongest Q2 on record…The 168 MW total is the second-highest quarterly total ever seen, falling just behind Q4 2019…Delays in construction, permitting and customer acquisition from Covid-19 may trickle through to Q3 and Q4 of this year.
…At 288 MWh, Q2 deployments grew 38% compared to Q1, indicating that installations have remained resilient through the lockdown period…The front-of-the-meter market, driven this quarter by a single short duration system, made up only one-third of the market in MWh terms, compared to more than half the market in MW terms…Q2 2020 was the strongest Q2 on record…This could indicate that deployments continue to scale up outside of traditionally busy seasons…The non-residential segment contracted slightly in Q2, buoyed by deployments in California…The residential market secured another record quarter in Q2.” click here for more
